Competition shawls typically come off the loom when they are 84 inches long. Sometimes the ends of the shawl are hem-stitched and other times the team must quickly knot the fringe at either end. Once this is done the team carefully cuts the loose threads and then runs the completed shawl to the judges table. Time does matter; the first team to get its shawl to the judges usually receives bonus points for doing so. Sheep-to-shawl competitions are timed and typically run for two and one-half hours. |
