Preparing Pelts for Tanning

  (1) Pelts on the truck as they arrive from slaughter. (2) Raw pelts before their first salting. Note how we raise
them above the floor on panels; this allows for lots of air circulation. A tarp is essential to catch loose salt. (3) First
salting. Depending on the weather this may take 7 - 10 days. (4) Second Salting. A thinner layer of salt is applied
for this second application. Depending on the weather this second salting may take another 7 - 10 days. (5) Once
the second salting is done we get the pelts out into the sun on clear, dry, days. We're always careful to get them
back into the barn before the dew falls. (6) This is what the raw pelts look like just  before they are boxed for
shipment.
