(1) Pelts on the truck as they arrive from slaughter. (2) Raw pelts
before their first salting. Note how we
raise
them above the floor on
panels; this allows for lots of air circulation. A tarp is essential to
catch loose
salt.
(3) First
salting. Depending on the weather this may
take 7 - 10 days. (4) Second Salting. A thinner layer
of
salt is applied
for this second application. Depending on the weather this second
salting may take another
7 - 10 days. (5) Once
the second salting is
done we get the pelts out into the sun on clear, dry, days.
We're
always
careful to get them
back into the barn before the dew falls. (6) This is
what the raw pelts look
like just
before they are boxed for
shipment.
